Fitness Programming for Fire Fighters

Abel, M., Sell, K, Dennison, K. Design and Implementation of Fitness Progams for Firefighters. Strength and Conditioning Journal. 33(4)31-42, 2011

“It is important to use the specificity principle when designing a … workout for firefighters. That is, select multijoint resistance and cardiovascular exercise that mimic tasks performed on the fire ground.”

At Capital Sports Injury Center with offices in Silver Spring and Bethesda Maryland, Dr. Steven Horwitz provides firefighter fitness training based on the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) guidelines and International Association of Fire Fighters (IAFF) Wellness and Fitness Initiative.

Fire Fighter testing is based on the NFPA Standard 1583 which describes multiple tests for fitness.
